Southern Railway increases Chennai train capacity; carries more passengers

Southern Railway has completed upgrading Chennai's suburban trains to 12-car rakes, increasing passenger capacity by 21%. This upgrade aims to alleviate overcrowding on key routes. The conversion to longer trains occurred on major lines like Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu and Chennai Central–Arakkonam. This change allows for up to 4 lakh more passengers daily, improving comfort for the current 8.6 lakh daily commuters. The upgrade is part of a broader effort to modernize the suburban system and address rising passenger numbers, improving safety and reducing congestion. The Avadi EMU Car Shed handled the conversion.
