South Africa to deport assassin of anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani to Poland
South Africa will deport Janusz Walus, who assassinated anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani in 1993, to Poland on Friday. Walus, 71, served nearly 30 years in prison and was released on parole in 2022, which led to public protests. The deportation follows a Constitutional Court decision after Walus completed his parole. South African officials stated that the Polish embassy will cover the costs of his deportation. Walus, who emigrated to South Africa in 1981, lost his South African citizenship due to his crime. Hani's assassination was a significant event during the final days of apartheid, impacting the country's transition to democracy.
