Sony reveals total production of PlayStation 3 consoles at over 88 million

A Sony employee has revealed that 88,159,116 PlayStation 3 consoles were produced from October 2006 to June 2016. This information came to light during a Twitter discussion about the PS3's boomerang controller. The employee shared a photo showing a PS3 marked "In memory of PS3 last production" at Sony's Japan headquarters. Previously, the last reported sales figure for the PS3 was about 87.4 million as of March 2017. While PS3 games can still be played on modern systems through PlayStation Plus, users are seeking native backwards compatibility. There are ongoing rumors about potential emulation on the PS5, but no confirmation has been made.
