Six UN peacekeepers killed in clashes with rebels in eastern Congo
Six United Nations peacekeepers were killed in fighting with M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The casualties include two South Africans, one Uruguayan, and three Malawians. The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the escalating violence. M23 has gained significant ground, encircling the city of Goma, which is home to about 2 million people. The UN plans to temporarily relocate nonessential staff from Goma while essential personnel continue critical operations. The recent clashes have also resulted in injuries to additional South African soldiers. The situation has raised concerns about the safety of civilians as M23 continues its offensive in the region.
