Sheridan Smith stars in new BBC drama, The Cage

Sheridan Smith is set to return to television with a leading role in a new BBC drama called The Cage. The show will be a crime drama based in a casino in Merseyside, where she stars alongside Michael Socha. The Cage is created by Tony Schumacher, known for his work on The Responder. The story revolves around two characters, Leanne and Matty, who both try to rob the same casino safe. Filming for the five-part series is expected to start soon in Liverpool and the surrounding area. This new role comes after Sheridan decided to cancel her upcoming autobiography, titled Honestly. The book was meant to cover her personal struggles, including her mental health, alcohol issues, and experiences with high-profile relationships. After several delays, she chose to put the project on hold, stating she wasn't ready to share her life in that way anymore. Sheridan's past has included challenges, including a public breakdown in 2016 during a West End show. She has openly discussed her mental health battles and the impact of her father's cancer diagnosis at that time. Recently, she expressed her gratitude towards the public for their support during difficult periods in her life. Her last play in the West End, Opening Night, ended early amid criticism and financial issues, which deeply affected her. Despite this, she feels stronger now and is excited to take on new opportunities like The Cage.
