Shanghai woman stages fake wedding to scam relatives out of $1.6 million

A woman from Shanghai staged a fake wedding to scam her relatives out of 12 million yuan (US$1.6 million). She convinced a hitchhiker to pose as a wealthy real estate businessman to gain their trust. The woman, surnamed Meng, created the scheme after her real estate agency failed in 2014. She claimed her new "husband" could help them buy properties at low prices. Meng sold a small flat to her cousin at half its value to further the deception. The story has gained significant attention on social media in mainland China.
