Cory Beardy, a 15-year-old cross-country skier from Shamattawa First Nation, won a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. He achieved this success in the 4x1K relay along with teammates John O'Neil, Sarah McCarthy, and Marley Gayler. Beardy's victory brought joy to his friends, family, and supporters. He also competed in other events, securing a fifth place in the 500-meter classic race and a fourth place in the 1K classic race. His coach, Marlene Enberg, expressed pride in his achievements, noting he was very close to medaling in those races as well. More than 1,500 athletes participated in the games, which took place from March 8 to March 15. Last year, Beardy competed in the Special Olympics Manitoba Winter Games and went on to qualify for the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary. Beardy has been training hard, practicing four to five times a week since he joined Team Canada. The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs acknowledged his hard work and dedication, calling him an inspiration to young athletes across the region. R.D. Parker Collegiate vice-principal Jeff Paradis, who also coaches Beardy, highlighted the athlete's strong work ethic. He compared Beardy's energy to the Energizer bunny, noting that he often trained harder than his teammates. Cory Beardy is now looking ahead to the 2029 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Switzerland, but for now, he celebrates his gold medal at the 2025 event. He is excited to share his achievement during the school's spirit week festivities.
