Seoul Biennale announces artistic directors for 13th edition
The Seoul Mediacity Biennale has announced its 13th edition, which will be led by Artistic Directors Anton Vidokle, Hallie Ayres, and Lukas Brasiskis. The exhibition, titled "Sèance: Technology of the Spirit," will take place at the Seoul Museum of Art and other venues from August 26 to November 23, 2025. This year's Biennale will showcase works from artists worldwide who draw on themes of the occult, mysticism, and spirituality. The curators believe that these alternative "technologies" can challenge the fast-paced, rational nature of modern capitalism. They suggest that exploring these themes can help us understand and change the political and intellectual structures around us. The title of the exhibition highlights the historical pursuit of contacting realms beyond everyday life. The curators argue that interest in these spiritual technologies often increases during times of social and political unrest. A list of participating artists and contributors will be released in the coming months. The design for the Biennale's visual identity comes from nonplace studio. Their design features radiant halos that symbolize spiritual energy. This approach illustrates how immaterial forces can be expressed through art and technology. The Seoul Mediacity Biennale, established in 2000, has gained international acclaim for exploring contemporary media trends in the city. This is the latest edition of a series that began with earlier exhibitions held between 1996 and 1999. More details about the event will be available on the Biennale's website in the future.
