Security forces operate in Latakia after Alawite killings
Security forces were deployed in Latakia, Syria, on March 8, following reports of the deaths of hundreds of Alawites. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 745 Alawite deaths in what they described as ethnic cleansing, along with 273 government and loyalist casualties. Colonel Hassan Abdul Ghani from the defense ministry stated that security and stability had been restored in coastal areas. He mentioned plans to pursue remnants of the former Assad regime in surrounding regions. State media reported that security forces were sent to address violations and thefts linked to the unrest caused by Assad loyalists. Footage showed armed men inspecting vehicles in the city.
