Scientists discover large terror bird fossil in Colombia
Scientists have identified a large "terror bird" from a fossil leg bone found in Colombia, dating back about 12 million years. This bird, possibly a new species, stood over 8 feet tall and weighed around 344 pounds. Previously, most terror bird fossils were found in Argentina, with species typically weighing between 11 and 220 pounds. The discovery in Colombia fills a geographical gap and suggests these birds thrived in diverse habitats, including tropical environments. The fossil site in La Venta indicates that terror birds were apex predators in their ecosystems. Researchers hope to find more fossils to better understand the evolution and extinction of these ancient birds.
