Santa Cruz Wharf partially collapses during major storm, three workers rescued
A section of the Santa Cruz Wharf collapsed on December 23, sending three construction workers into the ocean. This incident occurred during a major storm that brought waves up to 60 feet, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service. Two workers were rescued by lifeguards, while the third swam to safety. The collapse was part of a $4 million renovation project, and about 150 feet of the pier fell into the water. The storm also caused the death of a man at Sunset State Beach, likely due to high surf. The Santa Cruz Fire Department has closed the wharf until further notice, as dangerous conditions are expected to continue.
