San Diego Unified to vote on teacher housing resolutions
The San Diego Unified School District board will vote on three proposals regarding affordable housing for educators. This vote is set for Tuesday. Education leaders announced these plans at a news conference on Monday. Board president Cody Petterson emphasized the importance of teachers living in the communities where they work. He noted that many teachers can no longer afford to stay in these areas, especially with 969 staff members retiring this year. Kyle Weinberg from the San Diego Education Association highlighted the benefits of teachers living nearby. He explained that this connection helps educators understand their students better and improves classroom success. The resolutions to be voted on include several key objectives. One aims for 10% of the workforce to have access to affordable housing within the next ten years. Another intends to explore affordable housing options at district-owned properties, which could provide over 1,500 affordable units. The third resolution looks to establish a regional housing authority with the San Diego Community College District. Richard Barrera, a board vice president, mentioned that the district's consolidation of administrative buildings allows for these housing projects. The planned units will include different sizes to accommodate staff with children, focusing not only on teachers but on all school employees. Petterson also noted that reducing commutes could help support the district's environmental goals. The school board's meeting will take place at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Eugene Brucker Education Center Auditorium.
