San Bernardino deputy honored during football game tribute
Family and friends gathered in San Bernardino on Saturday night to honor Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., who tragically died in a car crash while pursuing a suspect last week. The emotional tribute took place during a football game. A flyover signaled the start of the event, drawing attention to Cuevas' legacy. Cuevas, 36, was not only a dedicated deputy but also a passionate football player for the Spartans, a team of police and fire department members. His coach, Dee Brown, described him as a "ball of fire" and noted his positive energy and leadership qualities. Family members of Cuevas participated in the ceremonial coin toss, marking the team's first game since his passing. The event brought out a large crowd, as many came to support both the local team and law enforcement. Attendees expressed their feelings of community support and shared connections to the players. San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus spoke about Cuevas' lasting impact in the area, emphasizing how he touched the lives of many. In a poignant gesture, the Spartans started the game with only ten players, leaving one spot vacant for Cuevas. Coach Brown explained that this first play was a special tribute to him. Meanwhile, Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., the man accused of driving the stolen car that caused the crash, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in court. The 22-year-old remains in custody without bail.
