Rwandan-backed rebels capture city in eastern Congo despite ceasefire declaration
Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have captured the city of Nyabibwe in eastern Congo, despite declaring a ceasefire earlier this week. This city is located 60 miles from Bukavu, the provincial capital, which the rebels are reportedly advancing toward. The M23 rebels previously seized Goma, a major city, and have been gaining control in the region. The Congolese government has dismissed the ceasefire as insincere, while the United Nations reports ongoing heavy fighting. Rwanda has deployed around 4,000 troops to support the M23 rebels. The conflict has led to significant displacement and casualties, with over 2,000 reported deaths in Goma since its capture.
