Rwanda-backed rebels seize control of Bukavu in eastern Congo
Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have taken control of the South Kivu provincial administrative office in Bukavu, Congo's second largest city, after facing little resistance from government forces. This marks a significant expansion of the rebels' territory. Residents in Bukavu reacted with mixed emotions, with some cheering for the rebels while others stayed indoors amid fears of violence. The situation contrasts with 2012, when the rebels only captured Goma, as they now appear to seek political power. Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi held a security meeting in Kinshasa, stating that Bukavu was "briefly" invaded but remains under Congolese army control. Troops from Burundi and South Africa are supporting Congolese forces in the region.
