Rwanda-backed rebels expand control in eastern Congo amid reports of violence
Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have expanded their control in eastern Congo, capturing Goma and several towns. The UN reported recent executions and rapes linked to the rebels, raising concerns about the worsening human rights situation in the region. Congolese forces successfully repelled a rebel attack near South Kivu's capital, Bukavu. In response to the conflict, many young people are volunteering for military training after President Félix Tshisekedi called for a mass mobilization. Goma faces severe shortages of water and electricity, forcing residents to travel long distances for basic needs. The M23 group claims to be working to restore services while asserting control over the city.
