Rwanda-backed rebels claim control of second airport in eastern Congo
Rwanda-backed rebels have claimed control of Kavumu airport in eastern Congo, marking their second airport seizure in the region. This follows their capture of Goma's international airport in late January. The U.N. reports that recent fighting has displaced 350,000 people, leaving them without shelter. Many are now in overcrowded makeshift accommodations. The M23 rebels continue to advance towards Bukavu, having taken several towns, including Katana. The conflict has resulted in over 2,000 deaths and worsened the humanitarian crisis in the area.
