Rwanda-backed rebels capture Bukavu, Congo's second-largest city
Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have taken control of Bukavu, Congo's second-largest city, with little resistance from government forces. This marks a significant expansion of their influence, following their capture of Goma last month. Witnesses reported residents cheering for the rebels as they advanced into the city. Many Congolese soldiers and civilians fled amid looting and panic, leaving parts of Bukavu deserted. Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi held a security meeting in Kinshasa, stating that Bukavu was briefly invaded but remains under Congolese army control. Troops from Burundi and South Africa are supporting Congolese forces in the region.
