Rwanda-backed rebels advance towards Bukavu as residents brace for conflict
Rwanda-backed rebels, known as M23, have advanced into Bukavu, eastern Congo's second-largest city. Residents reported heavy gunfire as the rebels reached the outskirts, prompting families to stay indoors and businesses to close. The M23 group has expanded its control, recently seizing Kavumu airport, which is crucial for military and humanitarian operations. This escalation has led to increased displacement, with 350,000 people lacking shelter due to ongoing violence. Congo's military faces challenges in responding effectively, and international discussions are planned at the African Union summit. Meanwhile, residents are fleeing Bukavu, fearing further conflict and shortages of supplies.
