Rubio urges Rwandan president for ceasefire in Congo conflict
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern to Rwandan President Paul Kagame about the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly after Rwandan-backed rebels captured Goma. The U.S. is urging the United Nations Security Council to take action against the offensive by Rwandan troops and M23 rebels. Rubio called for an immediate ceasefire and respect for territorial integrity. Congo has accused Rwanda of sending troops across the border, while Rwanda cites security threats from fighting near the border. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also engaged with both leaders regarding the situation.
