Rubio urges Rwanda to support ceasefire in Democratic Republic of Congo
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for an immediate ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid concerns over Rwandan-backed rebels entering Goma. He emphasized the need for respect for territorial integrity during a conversation with Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Rubio's request marks a shift from previous US efforts under the Biden administration, which had negotiated a fragile deal to ease tensions. The M23 group has recently taken control of Goma and its airport, escalating the conflict. Rwanda has denied seeking control of minerals in the region, stating its focus is on combating the FDLR, a group of Hutu militants.
