Rodrigo Duterte arrested over ICC warrant for crimes
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila on Tuesday after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for alleged crimes against humanity linked to his war on drugs. He was apprehended upon returning from Hong Kong. Duterte, 79, was arrested at 9:20 a.m. local time. Philippine officials reported he was in good health during the arrest, which was conducted by police officers wearing body cameras. Duterte's lawyers challenged the legality of the arrest, citing the Philippines' withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2019. He is currently held at Villamor Air Base and questioned the legal basis for his detention in a video shared online.
