Rodrigo Duterte arrested for crimes against humanity charges

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on March 12 by the International Criminal Court (ICC). This follows an investigation into allegations of crimes against humanity linked to his controversial "war on drugs." Duterte's campaign resulted in over 6,000 deaths and faced criticism for police abuses. Although he withdrew the Philippines from the ICC in 2019, the investigation continued after it began in 2021. Duterte denies the charges and is now set to face trial at the ICC. If convicted, he could become the first former Asian head of state tried for crimes against humanity.
