Rising screen time increases myopia in children

Health experts are warning about the rising problem of near-sightedness, or myopia, due to increased screen time among children and adults. This issue has become more serious since the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to more online learning and less outdoor activity. Many children now spend long hours on digital devices. Dr. Anuj Mehta, an ophthalmology expert, explained that focusing on screens for extended periods contracts the eye muscles. This ongoing strain can cause myopia, especially in young eyes. Dr. Kirti Singh noted that focusing on screens also reduces blinking, which can lead to dry eyes. This problem is worse in poorly ventilated spaces, or areas with too much air conditioning. According to Dr. A. K. Grover, the strain from screens may cause discomfort in the neck and head and make it hard to focus on objects at different distances. Experts agree that it is unrealistic to expect children to stop using digital devices. However, they suggest finding balance. Parents should encourage outdoor activities to help improve long-distance vision. One recommendation is the 20-20-20 rule: after 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. They also recommend at least two hours of outdoor activity each day.
