Reds extend catcher Jose Trevino for three years
The Cincinnati Reds announced a three-year contract extension with catcher Jose Trevino. The deal, which goes through the 2027 season, is valued at $15 million. Trevino's agreement includes a club option for 2028, and it guarantees $11.5 million of that amount. He is expected to start the season as the Reds' main catcher due to an injury to Tyler Stephenson. Stephenson has been sidelined with an oblique issue since March 11. Trevino was previously set to become a free agent at the end of this season. Last year, he played 73 games for the New York Yankees, hitting eight home runs and recording 28 RBIs. The Reds acquired him in December from the Yankees in exchange for pitcher Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson. In his seven seasons in the major leagues, Trevino has a batting average of .236 and has accumulated 32 home runs and 141 RBIs across 399 games. He was named an All-Star and won a Gold Glove Award in 2022. In last fall's playoffs, he had one hit in five at-bats with one walk.
