Red Cross warns of Ebola lab risks in Goma due to ongoing conflict
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has raised concerns about a laboratory in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, that holds Ebola samples. Ongoing fighting in the city poses risks of power cuts, which could jeopardize the samples' safety. Goma has become a battleground as the Tutsi-led M23 group and Rwandan forces advance. The conflict has displaced half a million people this year, worsening the humanitarian situation in the region. ICRC facilities are treating a surge of wounded civilians, with over 600 treated since January. Many patients are women and children, and the influx has strained medical resources in Goma.
