Rebels seize control of Goma as residents face food and water shortages
Rwanda-backed rebels have taken almost full control of Goma, a city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, after a week of fighting. Residents face severe shortages of water and food as they emerge from hiding. Hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties, and the city morgue is filled with the dead. The Congolese military, expected to protect the city, has been defeated. Captured soldiers from the Congolese military expressed anger towards their leaders, who abandoned them during the takeover. Many commanders fled by boat, leaving their troops to fend for themselves.
