Rebels resume attacks on DR Congo army as fighting escalates in South Kivu

M23 rebels have resumed attacks on Congolese forces in South Kivu, ending a brief pause in fighting. Heavy shelling began on Tuesday, just days after a summit called for a ceasefire. The rebels are advancing towards Bukavu, the province's capital. Since January, around 2,900 people have died due to the conflict, with approximately 700,000 displaced. Reports indicate that the M23 is forcing refugees to return home, a claim they deny, stating that returns are voluntary and secure. The M23, backed by Rwanda, claims to fight for minority rights, while the Congolese government accuses them of seeking control over mineral resources. Rwanda has denied supporting the rebels but acknowledges security concerns near its border.
