Rebels in eastern Congo displace over 110,000 as settlement camps close
Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have forcibly closed settlement camps in eastern Congo, displacing over 110,000 people in recent days. This follows their capture of Goma, the region's largest city, which has seen significant violence and casualties. The rebels issued a 72-hour ultimatum for displaced people to return to their villages, although they later stated that returns should be voluntary. Many families are now leaving camps without adequate support, facing further challenges in distant villages. Despite a declared ceasefire, fighting continues between M23 and government forces. The situation remains tense, with the rebels threatening action over reported killings in Bukavu, about 50 kilometers away.
