Rebels advance on Bukavu in eastern DR Congo as looting reports emerge
Rebels from the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), including the M23 group, claim to have advanced into Bukavu, the second largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Residents report seeing fighters in the streets and looting occurring. The AFC stated it took control of Kavumu airport, forcing government forces to retreat. This follows the rebels' earlier takeover of Goma, the largest city in North Kivu province, on January 27. While some residents confirm the presence of M23 fighters, others report no fighting in the city. Looting is widespread, with accusations that fleeing soldiers and civilians are involved.
