Ranvir Shorey's play mixes Macbeth's tragedy with comedy
Ranvir Shorey is excited about his role in Rajat Kapoor's play "What’s Done Is Done," which is a unique take on Shakespeare's "Macbeth." This production combines elements of clowning with the tragic story of ambition and downfall. Shorey plays Macky B, a version of Macbeth, and he describes the creative process as enriching and collaborative. Shorey says his previous knowledge of "Macbeth" gives him a strong foundation for this project. He believes the play makes the story accessible to those unfamiliar with the original while adding humor to the dark themes. “We poke holes in the narrative,” he explains, balancing tragedy with laughter. Performing such a serious story through clowning presents challenges, but Shorey finds it a natural fit. He notes that Shakespeare himself blended comedy and tragedy. Each performance brings new insights, allowing the actors to explore new ideas and emotions. Though Shorey is known for his film work, he values his theatre experience. He appreciates how theatre sharpens his acting skills. "The fundamentals remain the same," he remarks, highlighting the differences between stage and screen acting. As "What’s Done Is Done" prepares to stage in Bengaluru, Shorey looks forward to performing in a city he loves for its rich theatre community. The play will be shown on March 30 at Jyoti Nivas College in Koramangala, and tickets are available online.
