Randolph Police sergeant killed by train in Abington
Randolph Police Sergeant Scott Sherman tragically died after being hit by a commuter rail train in Abington on Sunday night. The authorities confirmed his death on Monday. Sherman, age 56, was off duty when the incident occurred. Police Chief Anthony Marag expressed condolences on behalf of the Randolph Police Department. He praised Sherman as a respected officer who served the community with honor and integrity for over two decades. The accident happened around 8 p.m. at the Birch Street railroad crossing. Transit Police received reports of a pedestrian struck by a train at the crossing. Fire responders pronounced Sherman dead at the scene. Investigations are underway by local police, MBTA police, and State Police. Initial findings indicate that the train was operating normally and was under the speed limit. Surveillance footage showed that the crossing lights were on and the arms were down when the accident occurred. Sherman had worked as a police officer for 23 years and became a sergeant in 2022. He was known for his humor and intelligence, with previous roles including a School Resource Officer and Elder Affairs Officer. The police chief requested privacy for Sherman’s family during this difficult time. More details about memorial services will be shared later as they become available. The investigation is ongoing, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is involved.
