Pune forest department lacks funds for wildlife water supply

The forest department is facing a funding shortage for water tankers that supply water to wildlife habitats in Pune district. This issue is critical because water is needed for planting trees, preventing fires, and providing drinking water for animals. With an early heatwave this year, the demand for water has surged. The department has created artificial waterholes that need to be filled by tankers. Unfortunately, a lack of funds is hindering these efforts across several forest ranges, including Pune and Junnar. Manoj Barbole, a range forest officer, mentioned that the costs of using tankers have increased due to rising fuel prices and repair expenses. He noted that challenges are amplified by the difficult terrain that makes transportation costly. The department is seeking help from NGOs and citizens to support their water supply efforts. Prakash Shinde, another forest officer, reported that only 18 out of 31 waterholes in his range are being filled. He plans to propose a project for a borewell and a solar power plant to provide a more reliable water source. Smita Rajhans from the Junnar Forest Department pointed out that while there is funding for creating waterholes, there are no dedicated funds for keeping them filled. She emphasized the need for consistent financial support beyond what NGOs can offer. A senior official, who wished to remain anonymous, remarked that urban forest areas, often visited by locals, face neglect regarding water issues for wildlife. Many citizens are aware of the problem but often overlook the needs of animals in these habitats.
