Pune doctors successfully remove bone near patient's heart

A 70-year-old man in Pune ended up in the ICU after swallowing a mutton bone during a wedding feast. The bone became stuck in his food pipe, causing serious injury. It was lodged just above his heart, putting him at risk of further complications. The incident took place on February 24 in Indapur. The man was moved between three hospitals before reaching Sassoon General Hospital for emergency surgery. Doctors confirmed with a CT scan that the sharp bone was stuck and could not be removed through open surgery due to the patient's age. When the man arrived at the hospital, he was in severe pain and couldn’t even drink water. The bone had perforated his food pipe, risking leakage onto vital organs. To protect the area, doctors placed a coated stent until the injury heals. Dr. Padmasen Ranbagle, who performed the surgery, noted that it took two attempts to remove the bone safely. The first attempt was unsuccessful, but they eventually used advanced endoscopy to extract the bone without causing more damage. Following the surgery on February 27, the patient began eating again just a day later. Hospital officials encourage everyone to be cautious while eating to avoid such dangerous situations.
