Pune converts community halls into libraries for learning
The Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) has started a new project to turn community halls, known as Samaj Mandirs, into libraries. This initiative, named ‘From Samaj Mandir to Gyan Mandir’, aims to improve access to education and promote reading in the district. So far, 223 community halls have been converted into libraries in 2024, and the Pune ZP plans to transform 450 more this year. Gajanan Patil, the CEO of Pune ZP, explained that these community halls were meant for social activities but were often underused. By changing them into libraries, they are now equipped with books, furniture, and areas for study. The libraries cater to all age groups, offering resources for both students and adults. Some community halls will also feature computer training centers in partnership with the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL). In villages with many students, each center will have ten computers. The success from last year prompted the Pune ZP to expand this program. Each library will cost about ₹5 lakh to set up, providing curated books and necessary furnishings. Patil highlighted that these spaces will be more than just libraries; they will be places for education, skill development, and community growth. Local residents have responded positively to the new libraries. Anjali Deshmukh from Gunawadi village shared her excitement about having access to study resources. Ravi Patil, a local entrepreneur, noted that the library has helped him access learning materials that are essential for his business. To ensure sustainability, the Pune ZP is collaborating with educational groups and NGOs for maintenance and enrichment of the libraries. They plan to host regular workshops and programs to keep the community engaged. As this initiative grows, it is expected to significantly improve educational opportunities in the district. Kedar Mane, a social worker, said that this project is a major step toward making education more inclusive and accessible.
