Producer defends Toilet Ek Prem Katha's box office success
Jaya Bachchan recently called the film "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" a "flop" during a public event. The movie, which starred Akshay Kumar and was released in 2017, focuses on sanitation issues in rural India. This comment did not sit well with the film's producer, Prerna Arora, who expressed her disappointment. Arora responded in an interview, saying it was hurtful to hear such remarks from Bachchan, whom she admires. She encouraged Jaya to check the box office numbers, as "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" was one of the biggest hits of 2017, making around ₹316.97 crore. The producer shared her admiration for Bachchan, saying she is a "huge fan" and enjoys her classic films. Arora explained that the title choice was risky and that the team was initially unsure about it. However, they believed it was important to address important issues through cinema. Bachchan had questioned the film’s title, suggesting it was not appealing. During her comments, she asked the audience how many would watch a film with such a name. Only a few raised their hands, leading her to conclude that the film was a flop. Arora is proud of "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" and would like to share it with Bachchan. She highlighted that risk-taking is vital in cinema and pointed out that Bachchan also took risks in her career with bold roles.
