Prisoner died after not receiving naloxone kit
A report has found that a man who died from an overdose the day after being released from prison was not given a life-saving medication. Michael Fox, 43, was released from HMP Humber on March 14, 2022. He died from drug poisoning just one day later. Fox had a long history of substance misuse, which was linked to his legal issues. He was sentenced for burglary in December 2021. His lawyer noted that Fox wanted to get clean from drugs, referring to spice as a "demon drug." While in prison, Fox received training on how to use naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. However, he was not given a naloxone kit upon his release. The Head of Healthcare at HMP Humber admitted this was a serious mistake. The prison has since started a review to improve their policies. City Health Care Partnership, which managed healthcare at HMP Humber at the time, has since stopped providing services in prisons. They expressed condolences to Fox's family and committed to investigating serious incidents thoroughly. The report recommends that prisoners at risk of overdose be provided with naloxone kits when they leave prison to prevent similar tragedies.
