*Princess Mononoke* returns to theaters in 4K IMAX
Studio Ghibli is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its acclaimed film, Princess Mononoke, by re-releasing it in theaters. This version will be shown in IMAX with a new 4K restoration starting March 26. The film, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, follows Ashitaka, a young warrior, who confronts a struggle between an industrial village and the forest spirits. Ghibli's vice president, Atsushi Okui, discussed the film’s lasting environmental message. He noted that when they created Princess Mononoke in 1997, they focused on environmental themes relevant to that time. Now, he believes this message is even more significant as global awareness about environmental issues is rising. Okui explained that Studio Ghibli films often reflect the time periods in which they were made. He mentioned that Princess Mononoke’s story of conflict between mankind and nature resonates strongly with current events. The film has inspired many artists in the U.S., including those behind the Avatar films. Okui shared that Ghibli's storytelling is influenced by earlier animation classics, including Russian and French works. When discussing the film’s initial U.S. distribution, Okui recalled how studio head Toshio Suzuki once sent a katana to ensure no cuts were made to the film. He explained that Miyazaki’s creative process involves starting with storyboards rather than a complete script, allowing for changes during production. Okui also addressed representation in Ghibli films. He stated that while strong female characters, like San, are important, the studio must reflect the societal changes in Japan regarding diversity. He acknowledged that Japan is still catching up in this area compared to other countries. Fans can enjoy Princess Mononoke's new IMAX experience in theaters starting on March 26.
