Poughkeepsie schools restructure elementary system to enhance safety and attendance
The Poughkeepsie City School District is restructuring its five elementary schools, aiming to improve student safety and attendance. Starting in the 2025-26 school year, students living more than half a mile from school may receive bus transportation. Currently, students walk to school, often accompanied by older siblings. The new plan will reduce the number of schools students attend and change start times, with younger students beginning at 8:30 a.m. and older students at 7:45 a.m. Funding for the transportation initiative has been secured, ensuring no tax increase for residents. The district will apply for "Child Safety Zone" designations to qualify for state aid, with a vote on transportation expected in May 2025.
