Police investigate man for starting South Korea wildfires
Police in South Korea are investigating a 56-year-old man linked to the recent devastating wildfires. The fires, which are the worst in the country’s history, began while he was using a lighter to burn branches at his grandparents' graves in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang. The man’s daughter reported that the flames spread quickly due to the wind after he started the fire on March 22. The wildfires resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and destroyed nearly 120,000 acres of land, including homes and historic sites. Officials have stated that the main fire was controlled after more than a week of destruction. Many victims were older residents, highlighting the personal impact of the tragedy. The South Korean Prime Minister has described this disaster as unprecedented and has emphasized the extensive damage caused. Investigators have not ruled out that other human actions may have contributed to the wildfires. Reports suggest multiple fires may have been sparked by different incidents, including burning trash and welding. Police have not yet decided if further charges will be filed.
