PMC asks to end GBS outbreak in Pune

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has asked the state public health department to declare the end of the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak. This request comes after a significant decline in cases of this rare nerve disorder. The last reported case of GBS in the affected areas was on March 2, 2025. The outbreak began when a rise in suspected GBS cases was detected starting January 9. The first case was identified on Sinhagad Road on January 13. Areas like Nandegaon, Nanded, Dhayari, Kirkitwadi, and Khadakwasla saw clusters of cases. City health officials initially believed contaminated food and water were causing the outbreak. They implemented preventive measures and monitored the situation closely. Cases of GBS peaked on January 20, but have since decreased significantly. So far, PMC has recorded 141 GBS cases and nine suspected deaths. Out of the confirmed patients, 117 have been discharged from the hospital, while 15 remain under treatment. Dr. Nina Borade, health chief at PMC, stated that while they await official approval to declare the outbreak over, ongoing surveillance will continue in local hospitals and clinics. GBS is a treatable disorder where the immune system damages nerves, leading to weakness in limbs and, in severe cases, problems with walking, swallowing, or breathing.
