Plea deal revoked for suspect charged with officer attack
A plea deal for Ronald Andrew Romero, a man accused of attacking law enforcement officers with a baseball bat, has fallen apart. The deal was canceled because new charges were filed against him. Romero had pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and battery charges in December. He was set to change his plea in court but refused to attend the hearing. On Monday, a judge issued a bench warrant for Romero after discussing his bond revocation. He was arrested later that day on new charges, including felony witness intimidation and misdemeanor domestic battery. Romero will appear in court for bond revocation on April 7 and for a change of plea on April 21. Romero's initial incident occurred on April 17, 2024, when he allegedly assaulted officers with various weapons and objects. He was reportedly aggressive and did not comply with police commands during the arrest. The new charges were not detailed in court documents. With the plea deal, Romero would have admitted to one count of aggravated assault in exchange for dismissing another count. He faced a hefty punishment, including possible life in prison. Now, both sides are looking to negotiate a new deal after assessing his latest charges. If Romero continues to avoid court, prosecutors may force his appearance.
