Pizza Hut workers in Scotland allege wage theft
Pizza Hut workers in Scotland are raising serious complaints against the Glenshire Group, a franchisee that runs 22 delivery outlets. They claim the company has changed timesheets, reduced wages, and stopped payments for delivery costs. The Unite union has filed a grievance on behalf of the drivers. Cian, a delivery driver, explained that his pay and working conditions were changed without any discussion. Previously, he received a basic pay plus £1.45 for each delivery to cover fuel. However, he was recently informed by text that his pay had increased to £12.21 per hour, but the delivery payment was eliminated. This change has left many drivers struggling to afford fuel. In a letter, Glenshire Group announced the removal of delivery commissions, citing the need to sustain operations. The company insists that driver commissions have not been reduced, but the payment structure has changed. Unite’s representative, Bryan Simpson, criticized Glenshire for potentially violating labor laws and said this could push drivers' incomes below the minimum wage. Workers have also accused Glenshire of unlawfully adjusting old timesheets to add unpaid breaks, which they were previously not allowed to take. Some employees say they work long hours without breaks and are now being penalized for not taking them. Cian, who feels compelled to speak out, believes he is standing up for workers who cannot voice their grievances. He fears this will put his job at risk but insists it's important to expose the issues. Glenshire employs over 200 people, including many drivers, and has reportedly seen some quit recently due to these changes. As new minimum wage regulations come into effect next month, legal experts warn that Glenshire could face significant penalties if it does not reimburse drivers for expenses like fuel. A spokesperson for Pizza Hut UK emphasized its commitment to fair treatment of workers and said it takes the allegations seriously. They noted that while Glenshire operates independently, the company will engage with affected employees and investigate the situation.
