Pitt-Johnstown to host second Democracy Bowl for students
Students from various counties will participate in the second Democracy Bowl at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on April 3. This event is aimed at helping students learn about America's history and democratic values as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. Around 100 students from eight school districts in Bedford, Cambria, Somerset, and Indiana counties are expected to attend. They will take part in civics trivia competitions, showcase civics projects, and tour the campus. Several organizations, including Fair Districts Pennsylvania and the Bill of Rights Institute, will also be present. Mark Conlon, a professor at UPJ and organizer of the event, expressed excitement about the students' engagement in learning. The keynote speaker will be Drew Crompton, a public finance attorney with extensive experience in public service. Conlon emphasized the importance of educating young people about democracy, stating that an active and informed citizenry is essential for the continuation of democratic institutions. Christian Wrabley, a civics teacher, described the Democracy Bowl as a significant demonstration of civic involvement and leadership among youth. The event is sponsored by UPJ, the Greater Johnstown School District, the Bill of Rights Institute, and The Tribune-Democrat, and is part of the university's American Civic Education and Literacy Initiative.
