Philippine government promises fair trial for Duterte
The Philippine government has stated it will ensure a fair trial for former President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC). This follows his transfer to the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity related to his drug war. Malacanang clarified that the government is no longer responsible for Duterte, but must still uphold his right to a fair trial as a Filipino citizen. This is in accordance with Republic Act 9851, which addresses serious crimes. The government emphasized there will be no special treatment in the legal process, responding to concerns raised by Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, who is also implicated in the ICC complaint. Duterte is set to appear before the ICC in The Hague.
