Peacekeepers killed in clashes with M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo
Fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in the deaths of soldiers from South Africa, Malawi, and Uruguay. South Africa reported nine soldiers killed while battling M23 rebels, who attempted to advance on the city of Goma. Malawi confirmed the deaths of three of its peacekeepers, and Uruguay reported one soldier killed and four wounded. The South African military stated that their forces successfully halted the M23 advance. In response to the escalating violence, the UN Security Council has rescheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the situation. The meeting will take place on Sunday, with the head of the UN peacekeeping mission expected to address the council.
