Papua New Guinea declares itself a Christian nation
Papua New Guinea's Parliament has passed a constitutional amendment declaring the nation a Christian country. The vote on March 12 resulted in 80 in favor and 4 against. The amendment adds a declaration of faith to the Constitution's preamble. Christianity will now be included in the Fifth Goal of the Constitution, and the Bible will be recognized as a national symbol. Prime Minister James Marape supported the amendment, noting the significant role of Christian churches in the country's development. The amendment follows consultations with communities and civil society in 2022, showing widespread support. Marape stated that the amendment does not affect the rights of individuals practicing other religions, as freedom of conscience remains protected.
