Over 8,000 Alawites seek refuge at Russian base
Over 8,000 Syrian Alawites have fled to Russia's Hmeimim airbase due to recent sectarian killings targeting their community and Christians in Tartus and Latakia. This marks a significant increase in refugees seeking safety amid ongoing violence. In addition, more than 10,000 Syrians have crossed into Lebanon, with many heading to Tripoli, where tensions may rise due to the influx of Alawites into a predominantly Sunni area. Historical animosities and economic challenges complicate the situation. Reports indicate that jihadist attacks continue, with evidence suggesting that more militants are arriving on the Syrian coast. The death toll from the violence is estimated to be over 1,000, with some sources claiming it could be much higher.
