Over 600 dead in recent Syria clashes
Clashes in Syria between security forces and loyalists of ousted president Bashar al-Assad have resulted in over 600 deaths in two days, marking one of the deadliest episodes in the 14-year conflict. The violence escalated after government forces attempted to detain a wanted individual. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the death toll includes 428 Alawites killed in revenge attacks, alongside pro-Assad fighters and security personnel. The previous count was over 200 dead. The government claims to have regained control of many areas. Residents reported widespread atrocities, including shootings and looting in Alawite communities. Many have fled to nearby mountains for safety. Roads to the coastal region have been closed to restore stability, while some Alawites seek refuge in Lebanon.
