Over 340 killed in Syrian coastal violence
More than 340 people, including women and children from the Alawite minority, have been killed in Syria's coastal region since Thursday, according to a war monitor. This violence marks a significant escalation in the ongoing civil conflict. The new Islamist rulers have launched a crackdown against what they claim is an insurgency linked to former president Bashar al-Assad's government. Heavy clashes have resulted in casualties among security forces as well. Thousands of Alawite and Christian residents have fled their homes amid fears for their safety. Reports indicate ongoing violence, including killings and looting, in the coastal city of Baniyas and nearby areas.
